Abstract:
Environmental monitoring of water is essential for sustainable industrial growth, especially in Gulf Coast areas having dense petrochemical-associated infrastructure. Assessing biological responses in a sentinel organism can complement conventional chemical analyses. Impaired gill tissue integrity and tubular disorganization were observed in American oysters exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of sertraline. Immunohistochemical analysis showed significant increases in expression of 3-nitrotyrosine and 8-hydroxy-2' deoxyguanosine, indicating elevated oxidative stress. Oocyte morphometric analysis revealed a substantial reduction in oocyte diameter. The bio-marker based approaches provide a framework for monitoring and ecological risk assessment of waters under influence of petroleum, petrochemical, and other industrial emissions.
