With over 400 million tonnes of plastic waste produced annually and less than 9% recycled, improved recycling technologies are essential for a circular economy. Pyrolysis converts plastic waste into valuable oils, but their chemical complexity presents challenges for quality control. GC×GC–TOF MS provides detailed characterisation of these complex mixtures, supporting contaminant identification and process optimisation. Similarly, increasing use of post-consumer recycled plastics requires sensitive detection of volatile compounds responsible for malodours and quality failures. Combining thermal desorption with GC×GC–TOF MS enables trace-level identification, supporting routine screening, improved recycled material quality, and more sustainable recycling processes.
