Fluorine in Waste Plastic Pyrolysis Oil: A Novel Analytical Approach via Combustion – Molecular Absorption Spectrometry

Abstract:
We present a novel approach for fluorine determination in waste plastic pyrolysis oil and other organic substances. The method employs combustion of the sample in the presence of water to convert organofluorine compounds into fluoride ions, which are captured in an aqueous phase. The fluorine concentration in the resulting solution is subsequently determined using high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS). With the aid of gallium, thermodynamically stable gallium fluoride molecules are formed that can be detected via characteristic spectral bands with high sensitivity. We demonstrate that the novel approach achieves detection limits and accuracy comparable to CIC, while significantly increasing sample throughput. Using MAS, the analysis time of one replicate after combustion is reduced to three to four minutes.
