Abstract:

PFAS are persistent pollutants linked to adverse health effects, with current maximum contaminant levels of 4–10 ng/L for six compounds. Conventional methods typically require labor-intensive solid-phase extraction from large water volumes. We developed a streamlined approach that concentrates PFAS directly in 5–15 mL sampling tubes by nitrogen evaporation before quadrupole-Orbitrap HRMS analysis. Alkaline buffer minimized losses during evaporation, while ≥80% methanol improved reconstitution. Large-volume sandwich injection enabled sensitive detection, with method detection limits of 0.02–0.62 ng/L for 23 of 24 PFAS and average recovery of 99.7%. Sample preparation required less than 2 hours per 12-sample batch.
