Koehler Instrument Company, Inc.

Dr. Raj Shah is a Director at Koehler Instrument Company, in Long Island, NY where he has been working for the last 28 plus years. He holds a Ph. D in Chemical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and Fellowship from the Chartered Management Institute, London. Dr. Shah is an elected Fellow of The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and was given the honor in 2016, in recognition for his outstanding contributions to the field of tribology. He is also the recipient of the Fellows award from NLGI since 2007, which endorsed his invaluable work in the field of greases. Raj is a Certified Professional Chemist and a Certified Chemical engineer with the National certification commission in chemistry and chemical engineering. He has also been awarded the Chartered Scientist status from the Science Council, UK and the Chartered Chemist status from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Dr. Shah is a Chartered Chemical Engineer with the Institute of Chemical Engineering , UK, an honor bestowed on very few Engineers in the USA. Dr. Shah is an elected fellow of American Institute of Chemists and of the Energy Institute, UK. That fellowship was awarded to him in recognition of his professional experience and depth of knowledge and expertise that helped make a difference in the field of Energy. Raj is also a Chartered engineer with the Engineering Council, UK and was elected a Chartered Petroleum engineer with the Energy Institute in recognition of his specific expertise as a practitioner in energy engineering. Dr. Shah is a recent recipient of the PM Ku medal from STLE and the John A Bellanti Sr. Memorial award from NLGI, both prestigious recognitions for his volunteer work with the respective institutions over the years. Raj has attended the Gulf coast conference religiously for the last 26 years and has been delighted to see the it grow over the years, to an event which provides the latest news and information about the petroleum and petrochemical testing industry , and it has been his honor to present here through the years. Dr. Shah is an active member of ASTM, STLE, NLGI, EI, GCC,SAE, ACS, AOCS, SPE, IFT, INSTMC, RSC and AICHE and chairs various subcommittees in several of these organizations. Raj has been particularly active with ASTM going back approximately 30 years. He was the vice- chair for the D02.G committee for over 10 years and served in leadership capacities in subcommittees D02. 9 and D02.12. In recent years, Dr. Shah is the co- creator and co- instructor for the ASTM hands-on Motor gasoline course, and the ASTM hands-on Fuel Technology Course. Raj is a previous recipient of the ASTM Award of Excellence thrice in his career, and has also been lauded with the illustrious ASTM Eagle award. Recently Dr. Shah was elevated to the title of Fellow by his peers at The Institute of Measurement and Control, a unique honor for an American engineer. The InstMC is recognized by the Royal Charter, UK as the premier professional body for scientists and engineers working in measurement, automation and control. The InstMC members original priority was to maintain the national infrastructure and support wartime logistics. During the post-war reconstruction years, attention shifted to developing new major infrastructure programs including nuclear power, oil and gas, the transport network and major industrial and chemical facilities. Currently the members of InstMC are still involved in all the above areas, but the digital age has opened a new sphere of involvement in the area of sensors linked to intelligence. This includes the Internet of Things, cyber security, smart cities and transport networks, driverless cars, and innovation in petroleum and petrochemical engineering. This year Dr. Shah received the Fellow award for Institute of Physics. The Institute of Physics (IOP) is one of the world’s largest professional body and learned society for physics inspiring people to develop their knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of physics, headquartered in London. The great challenges we face in years to come, such as climate change and developing clean energy are international in scope and physics is the key to a lot of these societal problems. International collaboration is essential to tackling them; no individual country can solve them alone and physicists, have a fundamental role in leading the development of technologies to address these problems. The IOP has international reach and global connections, but is independent of government or any academic institution or business. This enables them to bring together scientists and organizations from around the world, building the cross-border links that fuel scientific discovery and technological innovation. Dr. Shah is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, which is typically awarded by one’s peers to signify a scientist’s high level of accomplishment. He has over 575 publications, some of them even presented at the GCC and is the co-editor of several books including the reference bestseller, “ Fuels and Lubricants Handbook : Technology, performance, properties and testing ”. Dr. Shah is the only recipient of both the President’s award, 25th anniversary award and the Long service award from NLGI India and was honored in 2013 with the distinguished alumni award recipient from the Institute of Chemical Technology. In conferring him this honor ICT Mumbai, stated " Dr. Raj Shah, a professional par excellence due to his high degree of integrity , commitment and professionalism has been responsible for the high esteem in which his alma mater , the Institute of Chemical Technology is recognized " More recently National Certification Commission in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in Washington, DC honored Dr. Raj Shah with inducting him as a Certified professional chemist and Certified Chemical engineer. Dr. Raj Shah was also recently inducted as a Fellow at the Institute of Chemical Engineers. The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is a multi-national institution that advances chemical engineering's contribution worldwide for the benefit of society. They have over 35,000 members in more than 100 countries and is the leading professional society for Chemical engineers in the world. IChemE applies its expertise and experience to make an influential contribution in solving major global challenges. To be elevated to a Fellow at IChemE is considered the pinnacle in any Chemical engineers career. Dr. Shah was also invited for induction as an eminent engineer into Tau Beta Pi the oldest engineering honor society in the United States, which has over 600,000 members at 254 colleges and universities across the country An eminent engineer status is rare and is afforded only to one with remarkable and outstanding performance in their chosen engineering field as well as exemplary character. Extensive and significant contribution to the field of engineering is what got Dr. Shah this honor. Dr. Shah also has the distinction of being the only person to hold all 6 of these highly coveted certifications : namely CPC, CCHE, CEng, CSci, CChem, CPEng., and the singular honor of being an elected Fellow of all of these international professional organizations : namely, STLE, NLGI, AIC, RSC, INSTMC, IChemE, CMI, IOP and EI. Raj volunteers his time to both professional and charitable organizations and has served on the Founders board of directors of Developmental Disabilities institute, a special needs school for autistic children in Long Island, and also served on the NLGI board of directors for over 15 years. He is also currently on the board of directors at STLE, the premier professional society for Lubrication engineers and Tribology, and on the editorial board of several peer reviewed publications. Dr. Shah is also involved in working closely with several universities and is currently on the Advisory Board of Directors at: The Department of Chemical Engineering: State University of New York, Stony Brook, Dept. of Mechanical Technology at Farmingdale University, Samuel Ginn College of engineering, Tribology and lubrication science minor at Auburn University, Engineering technology Management at SUNY, Farmingdale and the School of Engineering design and Innovation at The Pennsylvania State University. Fluent in multiple languages, he enjoys kayaking, reading and mobile photography and lives in Melville, NY with his family.
