Making the Case for Referee Status – Aromatics in Jet Fuel by GCVUV ASTM D8267

ASTM D8267, Standard Test Method for Determination of Total Aromatic, Monoaromatic, and Diaromatic Content of Aviation Turbine Fuels Using Gas Chromatography with Vacuum Ultraviolet Absorption Spectroscopy Detection (GC-VUV), has gained widespread use.  The D8267 method is now approved for total aromatics and naphthalenes (diaromatics) in the ASTM jet fuel specifications ASTM D1655 and ASTM D7566. The versatility, precision, and applications of the D8267 method for aromatic speciation and boiling point distribution will be presented.
 
Jet fuel aromaticity is under increased scrutiny from OEM’s and regulators.  Modern methods are needed to meet current and future demands.  A case for the displacement of the referee aromatics method D1319 FIA and the referee naphthalenes method D1840 UVis will be presented.
