Abstract:

We present a simplified, software-controlled loop-delay thermal modulator for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) that eliminates stringent loop-alignment requirements, improving robustness and ease of use. Hot-jet temperature, valve operation, modulation period, and cold-jet gas flow are independently programmable, enabling flexible modulation conditions and effective modulation temperatures for compounds of varying volatility. Two models address different volatility ranges: an LNâ‚‚-cooled model for highly volatile C4+ compounds and a cryogen-free electric-chiller model for less-volatile C7+ compounds. Both models are compatible with most commercial gas chromatographs. This non-aligned architecture provides a robust, flexible, and practical modernization of traditional loop-delay GC×GC modulation.
