The Need for Speed: Evaluating Quadrupole Scan Rate for GC×GC Analysis of Pyrolysis Oils

Abstract:
Although thermally modulated GC×GC is commonly associated with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, advances in quadrupole scan speed are making comprehensive two-dimensional analysis increasingly accessible on conventional GC–MS platforms. In this work, thermal modulation is coupled with GCMS-QP2050, a fast-scanning quadrupole MS up to 30,000 u/s scanning speed to characterise pyrolysis oils and other complex petrochemical samples, enabling rapid group-type analysis and detailed compositional fingerprinting. By systematically evaluating the influence of scan speed on GC×GC data quality and the chemical information obtained, we demonstrate how Shimadzu single quadrupole GC–MS instrumentation can be extended to provide enhanced separation and rapid compositional screening of highly complex mixtures.
