Is There More to RON/MON Octane Quality Than a TSF and Round Robin?

Abstract:
Most labs verify RON/MON octane quality in two ways: a periodic Toluene Standardization Fuel (TSF) check on the engine and an interlaboratory round robin a few times a year. Both are necessary. Neither is sufficient.
An engine can pass every round robin and still be quietly biasing production results in the interval between checks. That gap is where off-spec product ships, or giveaway costs millions.
This session applies statistical quality control to CFR engine octane testing: control charting between round robin cycles to catch high variability, drift and bias as it happens, not after the fact. We'll also look at other ways to manage and control quality, such as tracking maintenance and predicting when the next intervention is needed, before there is a crisis.
