What if your laboratory’s biggest challenges aren’t really people problems?

Missed deadlines. Rework. Training gaps. Workarounds. Communication breakdowns. Resistance to change. Systems that don’t support the work. Recurring errors that never seem to go away.

It is easy to look at these symptoms and conclude that people are the problem. But what if the people are responding exactly as we should expect them to within the environment we have created?

Healthy laboratories depend on the alignment of three critical elements: people, processes, and systems. When those elements are out of sync, even highly capable employees can struggle to perform effectively. An inefficient process creates workarounds. Poorly implemented technology creates frustration. Unclear roles create communication gaps. Inadequate training creates inconsistency. And over time, these organizational weaknesses can begin to look remarkably like individual performance problems.

Building on the human-behavior concepts explored in It’s Not a People Problem: Understanding Human Behavior Through Empathy and Emotional Intelligence, this session expands the lens from understanding individual behavior to assessing the health of the laboratory as a whole.

Using real-world laboratory examples, participants will explore how to recognize organizational “symptoms,” evaluate the laboratory’s vital signs, and distinguish the visible problem from the underlying cause. The session will introduce a practical framework for examining the interconnected roles of people, processes, systems, technology, training, quality, and performance metrics to identify gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

Participants will leave with a different way of looking at laboratory performance: not simply asking “Who is causing the problem?” or even “How do we fix this problem?” but first asking “What is this symptom trying to tell us?”

Because sustainable improvement begins with understanding the entire laboratory environment—not treating one symptom at a time.
