Abstract:

Analysis parameters play an important role in data interpretation because the incorrect selection of experimental conditions can significantly affect the results of temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) studies. Active gas concentration, flow rate, sample mass, and temperature ramp rate can all influence the reduction temperature of a metal oxide. In this study, 13 wt.% CuO/Al₂O₃ exhibited a significant right shift in the reduction temperature when a highly diluted reducing gas was utilized, resulting in hydrogen depletion and an apparent increase in the observed reduction temperature. Additionally, the use of a very low temperature ramp rate produced a left shift in the reduction profile while significantly decreasing the signal intensity. Furthermore, flow rate was found to play an important role in the reduction behavior. Three different flow rates were evaluated, and only the highest flow rate provided sufficient hydrogen to achieve complete reduction of the sample. Therefore, this study demonstrates the importance of selecting appropriate analysis parameters to obtain an accurate and complete reduction profile.
