CAV 5: A New Architecture for Automated Kinematic Viscosity Testing

Abstract:
CAV 5 represents a new approach to automated kinematic viscosity testing, bringing together the proven capabilities of Cannon’s CAV 2100, miniAV, and CAV 4 platforms within a single, modular architecture. Designed to support a wide range of sample types and laboratory workflows, the system combines precise temperature control, configurable cleaning strategies, and intelligent test-start optimization to improve repeatability, throughput, and overall testing efficiency.
At the core of the platform is a single-bath modular design that simplifies installation and system configuration while reducing the complexity traditionally associated with multi-bath automated viscometers. Features such as TargetHeat™, Start Optimization, WashPort™, CleanBoost™, and heated sample handling are designed to help laboratories manage challenging samples, minimize carryover, and maintain consistent test conditions.
CAV 5 also introduces a more connected approach to laboratory operation. Sync Anywhere™, powered by FlowHub™, enables centralized method management, data consolidation, and instrument visibility while allowing each system to continue operating locally at the instrument level.
This presentation will examine the engineering and workflow considerations behind the CAV 5 platform and explore how its modular architecture, automated sample handling, cleaning capabilities, and connected data environment can support standardized, scalable kinematic viscosity testing in modern petroleum, lubricant, and quality-control laboratories.
