Evolving the Ubiquitous Benchtop GC/MS - How Constant Flow Splitting and Low-Cost Flow Modulation Can Bring Quantitative GCxGC-FID

Abstract:
GCxGC presents a unique challenge – how does one navigate data analysis for a separation that can regularly produce over 1000 peaks? Mass spectrometry is a popular solution to this problem, but because GCxGC can produce very narrow peaks, MS solutions for GCxGC have focused on fast and expensive high-resolution systems. This presentation will showcase a single quadrupole MS solution for GCxGC that leverages FID for quantification and MS for identification for hydrocarbon samples up to approximately nC31. The combination of flow modulation, hydrogen carrier gas, and conventional benchtop single quad represents a robust, familiar, and exceptionally low-cost GCxGC-FID/MSD system.
