Protecting Processes and Product Quality: Determination of Halogens and Sulfur in Hydrocarbons by Combustion-Ion Chromatography

Abstract:
Halogen- and sulfur-containing compounds in hydrocarbon streams can contribute to corrosion, catalyst poisoning, emissions, and reduced product quality. Combustion-ion chromatography (C-IC) provides a practical approach for determining these contaminants in challenging petroleum matrices. This presentation highlights C-IC determination of total fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and sulfur in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as well as total halogens and sulfur in aromatic hydrocarbons. Recent LPG results demonstrate automated sample introduction, efficient calibration, and sensitive analysis, while aromatic hydrocarbon results illustrate the broader applicability of C-IC to ASTM-based measurements relevant to refining, petrochemical processing, and product quality.
