Direct Mercury Analysis of Crude Oil and Petrochemical Matrices

Abstract:
Mercury determination in crude oils and other petrochemical matrices can be complicated by sample volatility, reactivity, and lengthy conventional preparation procedures. Direct mercury analysis provides a simplified alternative by combining thermal decomposition, catalytic conversion, gold amalgamation, and atomic absorption detection without acid digestion or chemical reduction. This presentation will discuss the direct analysis of challenging petrochemical samples, including approaches for managing highly reactive matrices through sample mass adjustment, modified temperature programs, and matrix-moderating additives. Performance data from crude oil reference materials and refinery samples will demonstrate the accuracy, precision, efficiency, and practical advantages of direct mercury analysis for routine petrochemical laboratories.
