Abstract:
The ASTM aviation fuels specification, D7566, requires method ASTM D2425 to measure the content of paraffinic, cycloparaffinic, and aromatic hydrocarbons. D2425 consists of: 1) separation to obtain the mass percent of the total aromatic and saturate fractions, 2) mass spectra for each fraction, and 3) total mass percent of each group type calculated from the mass spectra. The Selerity 4000 SFC, coupled to the JEOL UltraQuad™ SQ-Zeta mass spectrometer fulfills the requirements of D2425. SFC-FID-MS simplifies this method by splitting the flow post-separation between the FID and the MS. Modifications to the method for olefin and oxygenate content are possible.
