High-Throughput Quantitative Analysis of Trace Fluoropolymers by Py-GC/MS

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) regulations require rapid screening of fluoropolymers in food packaging materials. We developed a fast Py-GC/MS method for the quantitative analysis of trace polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in polystyrene (PS). Using a dedicated precolumn, optimized GC conditions, and SIM detection, the total analysis time was reduced to approximately 10 minutes per sample. PTFE-derived tetrafluoroethylene was selectively detected without interference from the PS matrix, even after 15 consecutive analyses. The method achieved excellent sensitivity (S/N = 524 at 50 ppm PTFE) and repeatability (RSD = 4.1%, n = 5), demonstrating its suitability for high-throughput fluoropolymer screening.
