Material selection for PFAS separations: transfer tubing, GC systems, and HPLC systems

Abstract:
The analysis of PFAS materials has become a hot topic due to both the increasingly low-level quantification required by many regulatory agencies, complicating factors like contamination of samples from the environment, and handling challenges since PFAS molecules are everywhere. While entire sessions can be rightfully dedicated to method development and sample preparation for PFAS separations, one often overlooked consideration is the choice of material for transfer tubing, capillaries, pumps, columns and other components that may be in the fluidic flow path. Here we will discuss the benefits and disadvantages of polymer-coated (both fluorinated and non-fluorinated), stainless steel, and silicon-coated stainless steel components for both gas phase and liquid phase analysis of PFAS compounds.
