Friction modifiers (FMs) are crucial lubricant additives for reducing energy loss and surface fatigue. Over the past three years, 2D nano materials (MoS₂, h-BN, graphene
derivatives,Ti₃C₂Tₓ[MXenes]) have appeared as alternatives to traditional organomolybdenum compounds. This poster examines friction reduction mechanisms, reported performances, and formulation challenges in regards to the aforementioned 2D materials. Hybrid systems (systems combining multiple FMs) tend to outperform single component FMs. MXenes in particular have shown up to a 47% decrease in the coefficient of friction (COF).2 Two key hurdles stand in the way of 2D materials and their commercial viability:getting them to stay dispersed in oil and playing well with existing additive packages. Sulfur and Phosphorous free 2D FMs seem to be the most promising direction.
