Abstract:
Ethanol is a commonly used mobile phase in HPLC. While reagent-grade ethanol is perfect for this analysis, it creates hazardous waste. Food-grade commercially available ethanol, however, can be disposed of down a drain, so would be considered a “Greener Method.” This would make it a suitable option for analysis of food products, in terms of both disposal costs and initial purchase costs. This study analyzed a standard solution with six compounds commonly found in soft drinks, using Tito’s Handmade Vodka as our mobile phase, to determine if the use of commercially available ethanol will yield suitable results.
