Abstract:

Water contamination significantly compromises the performance and longevity of grease lubricants across various industrial applications. This poster explores the adverse effects of water ingress on grease systems, including accelerated wear, corrosion, and reduced lubricating efficiency. Additionally, it introduces a novel method for assessing grease useful life by measuring the contact angle between a water droplet and a grease sample. This technique determines both the consistency and the susceptibility of grease to contamination, enabling precise lifespan regulation and service period management. The newly developed portable contact angle instrument offers an efficient, non-destructive field-testing method for evaluating water contamination in various service applications. This advancement facilitates a deeper understanding of grease properties in situ and their vulnerability to environmental contaminants.
