Abstract:

Atmospheric Solid Analysis Probe (ASAP) has been popular last decades for insoluble or high boiling material analysis with the development of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI).  Dow’s Core R&D Analytical Science (AS) and Waters Technologies Corporation (Waters) collaborated the test of the new-to-market instrument specifically for industrial applications (Waters RADIAN) in 2021-2022. In this evaluation, Dow AS performed multiple sample analyses using RADIAN including glycols, polyols, additives, and polyurethane prepolymers. The data were compared with multiple other products for characterization purposes. Compared with conventional thermal desorption/pyrolysis (TD/Py)-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), the results indicated promising potential applications for time-efficient and screening procedures of solid and non-soluble sample analysis. In this presentation, Dow AS also shares gained knowledges about the operation of RADIAN for high boiling liquid/solid/oligomeric/polymeric sample analyses without additional processing/preparation as merits and the gaps from the newly developed instrument under industrial settings.
