Abstract:

Polyethylene is one of the most important industrial polymers, and NMR is essential to evaluating its molecular structure by measuring co-monomer content, sequence distribution, unsaturation, and long chain branching.1 Routine polyethylene NMR analyses require the use of specialized, deuterium-based solvents. While necessary for locking and shimming the NMR field, these solvents are expensive, subject to supply interruptions, and often hazardous. Here, we share our progress at Dow Chemical to find safer, deuterium-free solvent systems for routine polyethylene NMR.
