Abstract:

Acquiring helium to be used for carrier gas on GC and GCMS systems continues to be a challenge.  Issues with supply are requiring laboratories to rethink not only their analytical methods, but also their instrument processes.  Alternative carrier gases can be used for many methods, but there are times when the only option is helium.  As an instrument operator, we need to understand the possibilities available to us. Knowing the different options for carrier gases, the pros and cons of each gas, and what to do when helium is the only option is key.
