Abstract:

The evolution of fuel specifications to incorporate renewable fuels into product portfolios presents a unique opportunity for GCxGC to set a new standard for petrochemical compositional analysis. Barriers to adoption of GCxGC in production labs historically have included investment cost, lack of established methods, instrumentation footprint, and complexity of method development. The Agilent reverse-flow modulator is a low-cost and cryogen-free GCxGC solution that is simple to maintain and adds no additional instrument footprint. The recent approval of ASTM D8396 marks the introduction of standardized routine GCxGC to the petroleum QC laboratory for jet fuel analysis. This presentation will cover the conversion of D8396 from helium to hydrogen carrier, as well as strategies to expand the method to diesel and light cycle oil streams by highlighting the effects of column choice, flow parameters, and temperature programming on the separation of molecular classes.
