Abstract:
Recently the US government announced that it will get out of the helium business allowing the private sector to develop this industry to meet the supply needs of the United States. This has resulted in higher prices and a supply crunch of helium of which many GC users are aware and asking what can be done. This presentation will explore the options of nitrogen and hydrogen for an alternative carrier gas in GC and the implications that switching from helium brings. Various applications, detectors, column dimension changes, parameter settings and method translation will be discussed. For those methods that ultimately prove too difficult to move away from helium carrier gas, conservation considerations will be explored.
