Abstract:
The chemical composition of in-service motor oils contains important information on the health and function of the engine. Two ASTM methods use gas chromatographic (GC) methods to measure fuel and coolant contamination in the used oils. ASTM D7922 combines GC with headspace sampling to simplify the separation and quantification of glycol coolants. ASTM D7593 uses GC with a unique back-flush configuration to quickly measure fuel contamination. In this presentation two systems will be described to successfully run both D7922 and D7593. Best practice techniques will be discussed to achieve fast, reliable results with a high level of precision.
