Abstract:

Improving process unit performance requires a cyclic approach to sampling, measuring, controlling, and ultimately managing value.  Model predictions rely on precise measurements.  The characterization of naphtha feed to the reformer enables mathematical models to predict yields, catalyst life and final product quality.  The naphthene and aromatic content of the feed (N+A) is a critical input parameter.  This paper will provide insights into the (N+A) measurement process.  Naphtha proficiency test program data indicating multi-laboratory precision for traditional techniques will be discussed.  This data indicates current best industry practice and precision.  ASTM D8369 using Verified Hydrocarbon Analysis™ (VHA) Appendix X3 parameters (ambient initial oven temperature and hydrogen carrier) as applied to naphtha feed and reformer product is also presented.
