Abstract:

SIFT-MS is a real-time field-deployable mass spectrometer that provides online trace analysis of ambient air with detection limits down to sub-ppbv levels.  SIFT-MS has some key characteristics that make it ideally suited to industrial fence-line monitoring applications:

-SIFT-MS can be installed at the fenceline for direct point-source air quality measurements providing a 24/7 data stream with automated instrument validation with minimal periodic operator intervention.

-SIFT-MS provides highly sensitive monitoring of a diverse range of species through the utilization of both positive and negative chemical ionization agents.  Target compounds include: acid gases (incl. HCl, HF),  permanent gases (incl. CO2, SOx, NOx, Ozone), volatile organometallics, oxygenates (incl. aldehydes; formaldehyde), nitrogen-containing compounds (incl. amines; ammonia), reduced sulfur compounds (incl. hydrogen sulfide), halogenated compounds, and hydrocarbons.

-In addition to the mass spectral identification of species, SIFT-MS provides an additional dimension of chemical selectivity through the simultaneous application of multiple reagent ions.  This vastly reduces the number of false-positive reports compared with online mass spectrometers that rely on a single ionization mechanism.

Several case studies will be presented, including the deployment of SIFT-MS for 24/7 continuous monitoring at fixed installations and mobile measurements at the fenceline of a Korean semiconductor manufacturing facility (Samsung Electronics), and the localization of fugitive emissions at a gas refinery in New Zealand. Highlights from the Syft Clean Air Roadshow in 2021 will also be discussed.
