Abstract:

Paraphrasing Peter Drucker’s famous quote, there is a difference between doing things right and doing the right things. The first refers to leadership, the second refers to management. When it comes to quality control, there is a tendency to strive for continuous improvement, the idea being if problems are addressed one at a time, the overall quality will improve. But getting rid of what does not work does not necessarily produce the desired results. So, the question is; Are we doing things right or are we doing the right things?

This presentation will propose a Statistical Quality Control approach that looks at the analytical laboratory as a whole system rather than individual parts and how to refine the system to achieve the desired quality improvements. The performance of a system depends on how the parts fit, not how they perform separately. We have plenty of knowledge, let’s increase our wisdom. Let’s explore quality and continue our journey from efficiency to value.
