Abstract:

Determination of trace metals in carbon-based samples is essential to characterize and monitor for production efficiency as well as environmental and health concerns.   However, high volatility and solidifying of carbon-based products can affect the stability of the signal, carbon build-up on the torch, plugging of the nebulizer, and extinguishing of the plasma.  Using the elemental workhorse of many labs, ICP-OES, this talk will demonstrate and discuss the direct analysis of typically difficult samples such as volatile products like gasoline and solid/semi-solid products like fully hydrogenated soybean oil. Results of the Agilent 5900 ICP-OES and the IsoMist Programmable Temperature Controlled Spray Chamber will be presented.
