Abstract:

Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA) has its origin with Neil Johansen and company in their 1993 paper that outlined the speciation of gasoline by capillary gas chromatography. The technology has improved tremendously since the days of long integrator printout on large tables.  Today’s DHA are computer driven and much more robust.  They are still based on Flame Ionization Detection and on retention time index. A recently developed detector for the petroleum industry, GC-Vacuum UltraViolet (GC-VUV), brings an additional dimension to the DHA – the VHA (VUV hydrocarbon Analysis).  With spectral ability, the VHA offers a faster analysis, a quicker reprocessing, and a more robust analytical methodology. This paper will compare the pros and the cons of DHA and VHA in a variety of refinery and petroleum samples.
