Abstract:

Subtle differences in ink formulations are common. In some instances, the product will suddenly be more brittle, easily deformed or fail in routine use. Detailed analyses of the good and bad polymer reveal differences in the additives, the presence of unwanted contaminants or unexpected chemical linkage. All the past methodologies for the determination of organic pigments are based on solvent extraction, filtration, and concentration. These traditional techniques are time-consuming and suffer from analyst-to-analyst variability while producing data of limited value. In this work, Pyrolysis-GC/MS is used to characterize and compare two ink samples while eliminating any solvent extraction or sample pretreatment.
