Axcend, Provo, UT, and Brigham Young University, Provo, UT
Milton L. Lee received a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Indiana University in 1975. Dr. Lee spent one year (1975-76) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Post-doctoral Research Associate before accepting a faculty position in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Brigham Young University where he became the H. Tracy Hall Professor of Chemistry. Dr. Lee currently serves as the Chief Science Officer of Axcend.
Dr. Lee is best known for his research in capillary separation techniques and mass spectrometry detection. He is an author or co-author of over 600 scientific publications and has given numerous technical presentations on various aspects of his research. He has received a variety of national and international awards including the American Chemical Society Award in Analytical Chemistry in 2019. He was named five times (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021) by The Analytical Scientist as among the 100 most influential people in the analytical sciences. Dr. Lee mentored over 100 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers.
Professor Lee is also an entrepreneur and has been involved in transferring technology from his university research laboratory to the private sector. He co-founded four companies during his academic career at Brigham Young University to commercialize instrumentation in supercritical fluid chromatography, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, hand-portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and, most recently, hand-portable liquid chromatography.
