Abstract:
Quality of Jet Fuel is key to flight safety. It’s composition, in particular aromatics content, is regulated to ensure proper combustion characteristics and compatibility with aircraft fuel systems. As the aviation industry moves to lower carbon intensity, new fuel types emerge which differ in composition from traditional petroleum-based fuels. Legacy test methods struggle to meet performance characteristics required to test these sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). A new test method (ASTM D8396) was developed, based on comprehensive two-dimensional GC. This method provides detailed hydrocarbon group-type composition, whilst the simplicity of the flow-modulated setup allows implementation in routine lab environments.
